Race description

The Backyard Ultra is an extreme form of long-distance running, where participants must complete a lap of 6.706 kilometers (4.167 miles) and have exactly one hour to do so. The competition only ends when the second-to-last runner drops out, and it is not the fastest but the most enduring runners who win. This event challenges both physical and mental endurance, as participants do not know how many laps they will have to complete in total. The concept was developed by Gary Cantrell, also known as Lazarus Lake, and has been held in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, since 2011.

Highlights

  • The length of the lap is chosen so that 100 miles can be covered in 24 hours.
  • Unlike typical running competitions, the person with the fastest time does not win – the winner is the one who does not give up.
  • Beginners to ultrarunners are equally welcome, as the low running pace allows for participation.
